Tips for Reducing Post-Op Recovery Time

by shanghainight

So you’ve got surgery coming up and now you’re thinking about how to get back to normal as quickly as possible? If you can’t wait to return to the gym, work, and everything you love, the good news is that recovery is a straightforward process as long as you make the choices.

Not sure what that looks like? Here are a few ways to get you feeling normal faster than you’d think possible.

Listen To Everything Your Doctor Says

As silly as it sounds, some people aren’t going to want to do this when they hear something they don’t like. If someone isn’t listening, they really might be extending their recovery time. When it comes to it, some people have a hard time doing what they are told.

Some examples are not lifting anything heavy, not sitting down in the bath and just showering, taking a break from working out, etc. They aren’t telling you these rules to punish you in any way, if there’s a rule like this they set, listen and follow it exactly.

If it seems like overkill, just ask a few follow-ups to learn why they are setting the rules in the first place.

Wear The Right Clothing

Make sure you wear loose and comfortable clothing in the weeks following your surgery. You want to steer clear of anything that might annoy or irritate your surgical sight. As much as it might not be fun to do, loose clothing will also allow you to more easily monitor your surgical sight to get ahead of any kind of draining that might occur.

Throughout your recovery, also consider wearing medical grade compression garments both before and when you return to wearing your normal clothes. Having compression garments covering your surgical area will act as a barrier between the area and the possible roughness of your normal clothing all while being designed to be breathable.

Having compression garments also allows for your body to flush out any hazardous fluid that might need draining. If your doctor recommends you get one, actually try to get 2 so you’ll always have one to wear once the other one is dirty and in the process of getting washed.

Try To Walk

While it might seem like the time to stay put, you might get into additional complications if you aren’t moving enough. Now, no one is suggesting to run during this time but just getting up and walking around the house, or wherever you are comfortable, is going to help in preventing any kind of blood clots or astrological issues.

Having some light activity during this time can also prevent any lung problems from occurring which can increase the period between your surgery and feeling completely normal again.

Remember, start slow and just walk around somewhere like your home. Once you feel confident, maybe then start to take a few steps outside or make your way to somewhere you’re familiar with, like a mall or similar space.
